Chapter IV Beyond the Banks Of Bywater. May 24th

Dimple shoved the chest hard and pushed it out of the way. Her tunnel sat there covered on the other side by potato sacks she moved them around as silently as she could and climbed through. the pantry was dark and quiet she felt like a little mouse sneaking around to get dinner. Dimple's stomach rumbled a low long lament. "shh!" she said softly to herself. she wandered to the shelf by the door that was located to her left. That was where her mother kept the bread, Dimple put out her hand and tried to find a smallish feeling piece, Aha! Dimple lifted a roll to her nose, oh yes a mushroom and cheddar roll. Dimple licked her lips. Tonight was a night for mushrooms. Dimple walked to the shelf right beside the bread shelf and found herself a little wedge of cheese. yum this has mushrooms in it too! all she needed was something to drink and maybe some fresh mushrooms. she wandered now over to the shelf under a very high window, where the veggies were kept. the smell of mushrooms again filled her nostrils. she looked up out the window at the hills rising in the light of a crescent moon...what was that on the hill? Dimple squinted, yes it was something. Something very big... with wings! "Oh my foots!" Dimple gasped quietly "is that a dragon?" Dimple had heard a man once going on about what dragons looked like after he had stepped out of the Green Dragon.
Dimple's eyes got wide, it was a dragon pure white, and amazingly fierce looking. she darted away from the window terrified. Nobody had ever seen a dragon in the Shire before! at least...not that she knew about. I see you naughty one. Dimple nearly dropped her bread and cheese, was that her imagination? or did the dragon really speak.
Miss. Millstone, I know you're there.
Dimple whimpered. This was way to freaky for her, she got down on all fours and started crawling towards her tunnel. the bread and cheese forgotten.
Where are you going small one?
another whine was sounded from Dimple.
I only wish to speak with you Miss. Millstone.
Dimple stood up, shaking she walked over to the window and looked out over to the dragon, it was staring right at her. Terror froze her little mind she put her hand on the shelf to steady herself.
There you are!
Dimple almost cried out with horror the dragon was missing an eye. she had never seen anything more awesome and terrible.
Do not quiver so hobbit!  you look like a scared rabbit!
Dimple tried to steady herself, but to no avail so she just put on her always available smile. her teeth chattering.
That's better! you are almost pretty when you smile!
Dimple immediately snapped out of her fear, she was angry now! Who did he think he was talking to? Dimple considered herself very pretty even when she frowned! stupid drag-- she stopped mid-thought if she could hear the dragon's thoughts he could probably hear hers too!
Little hobbit! I am not stupid!
The dragon glared at her.
I am sorry for calling you that! but really! you scared me terribly!
The dragons glare didn't subside any from its fierceness.
I thought i would be talking with someone intelligent but apparently I thought incorrectly.
Dimple was even more angry from that statement!
Who do you think you are anyway!!! to be telling me that I am stupid and ugly!
The dragon cocked it's head, and seemed to be thinking of a nice title for itself.
Firstly I did not call you ugly, nor did I call you stupid. like you did to me.
Dimple felt her cheeks flush.
I am Starfell guardian dragon of the Shire. I keep you hobbits away from trouble and I keep trouble away from you. But it seems in your case I cannot separate the hobbit from the trouble.
Dimple puzzled over this statement for a while. the dragon looked like he was laughing...(that is if dragons can laugh.)
So Mr. Starfails or whatever your name is what do you want with me?
The dragon huffed.
Not Starfails! Starfell! and as for what I want? I only wished to speak to you!
About what! Dimple asked impatiently.
YOU! you are being watched Miss. Millstone. By me and by someone who doesn't mean as well as I do.
Dimple rolled her eyes.
Yeah sure! and I am also being chased by orcs!
Starfell glared at her even harder.
Watch what you say small one.
Dimple's stomach made a noise like a dying goose.
Well Starfell! Do you mind if I go back to what I was doing before you interrupted me?
Starfell stomped the ground. suddenly Dimple received a rush of thoughts. something about silly hobbits and their lack of care for anything except Pipeweed, their stomachs, and their front doors.
Well I never! Mr. Dragon! You know nothing of hobbit life! we have many cares! and many jobs! not just eating and smoking!!!
Starfell stopped the thoughts that were streaming into Dimple's mind.
I really need to work on this communication system!
Dimple smirked and then wandered back to her room,
Whatever! she thought to herself. Dimple pushed the trunk back into place and crawled into her bed.
Completely forgetting the bread and cheese she had left on the pantry floor.
